2.5 Ignorance thinks of the impermanent as permanent

अनित्याशुचिदुःखानात्मसु नित्यशुचिसुखात्मख्यातिरविद्या

anitya asuci duhkha anatma su nitya suci sukha atmakhyatir avidya

Ignorance thinks of the impermanent as permanent, the impure as pure, pain as pleasure and the non-self as the self.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 2.5

anitya = impermanent
asuci = impure
duhkha = pain
anatma = non-self
su = in these
nitya = permanent
suci = pure
sukha = pleasure
atma = self
khyatir = thinks
avidya = ignorance, blindness to absolute truth

In the Summer I often come to Hastings (a seaside town in the UK) and see and hear seagulls and baby seagulls. It’s not the same baby seagulls I see every year, but there is something very same-y about them.

Death has nothing to do with going away.
The sun sets and the moon sets, but they’re not gone.
