Dhal Curry

Tried “vegan-izing” a dhal recipe and it was soo good and simple to make, thought I’d share it here 🙂

Ingredients (Makes about 5 servings)

  • 250g red lentils
  • 3 or 4 cloves of garlic (sliced)
  • 4 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 tbsp vegan butter
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp turmeric
  • 6 tbsp soya yoghurt
  • 2 red chillies (or 1 tsp red chilli powder)
  • Approx 600ml water
  • 1/4 cup coconut cream (optional)
  • Fresh coriander for garnishing

Method

  1. Wash and then soak the lentils in clean water for 2 hours
  2. Put the oil and butter in a pan and heat on a medium heat
  3. Add the cumin seeds to the oil and stir until they turn a little darker
  4. Then add the garlic and stir until the garlic turns light brown
  5. Add the lentils and cook on a low heat for about 5mins, stirring to avoid burning them
  6. Stir in the salt and turmeric
  7. Then stir in the red chillies and soya yoghurt
  8. Add 150ml of water and simmer for about 5mins, then add water little by little, stirring occasionally. Use more or less water as needed, depending on how much the lentils absorb.
  9. Once the lentils are soft, stir in the coconut cream and serve topped with fresh coriander and basmati rice.

I decided to check out your site after our coding session last week. This recipe has inspired me to try making Dahl for the first time tonight 🙂

Hope it works out yummy! 😋 I usually try to make loads and can freeze it or save for another day too.

It turned out really great!! I also added some baby spinach, a tin of tomatoes and some lemon juice. It made a nice big pot. I love the fresh chilli in it! Looking forward to eating it again tomorrow haha 😋

That sounds really good! Nice idea to add in other veggies too, will have to try that next time!
